What is the Freedom Food Scheme?
The Freedom Food label is RSPCA’s farm animal welfare assurance scheme, looking to promote the welfare of animals used for live stock.
This program assess hatcheries, farms, hauliers and abattoirs to ensure that farm animals have been well cared for throughout their lives. The standard covers all aspects of an animals life, their health, diet, environment and care.

Freedom Food Membership
Freedom Food charge a membership fee based on the size and type of business, as well as a license fee for use of the name and certification mark on products and menus.
To achieve Freedom Food Membership your premise will beed to undergo an assessment which can take an average of two and a half hours. In preparation for your assessment, the following documents must be available:
• Defra advisory booklets
• Veterinary health plans
• Veterinary medicines/treatment records
• Farm policies
• Training records
• Production records
After assessment, you will be provided with a report detailing your level of compliance and any non-compliances. Within four weeks of the assessment you will need to provide evidence that any non-compliances have been corrected. To maintain certification, you will receive a letter six weeks before your certificate expires.
Once you are an established member of Freedom Food, you will receive a monitoring visit from an RSPCA farm livestock officer within your first year of membership. Businesses with renewed membership will receive compulsory, and sometimes unannounced visits, to provide continued assurance of compliance. These visits are not charged and will cause as little disruption as possible.
